Pinkberry’s frozen dessert restaurant first opened in January 2005 in West Hollywood founded by Hye Kyung (Shelly) Hwang and Young Lee. The present headquarters of the company is located in Scottsdale, Arizona and now boasts more than 260 franchises in twenty countries. The company specializes in frozen yogurt, smoothies, Fruit Parfait and fresh fruit bowl
Pinkberry’s History
When Hwang first ventured into business, the plan was to open a formal English inspired teahouse on Huntley Drive in West Hollywood, California. The place was ideal for a teahouse because it was a tiny residential street until Hwang and Young Lee decided just to go with another idea that is to revive a 1980s craze, the frozen yogurt concept.
Soon after the first store opened, people were driving across town and forming up lines willing to wait for up to thirty minutes just to get their orders. It was phenomenal for business partners Hwang and Lee and the phrase “the taste that launched 1,000 parking tickets” were born. In September 2006, Pinkberry opened its second store and ever since, Pinkberries in different locations began springing all across Southern California and several in New York. Pinkberry opened its first overseas branch in Kuwait in October 2009, and their first location is at the Avenues Shopping Mall.
Creating A New Trend
The success of Pinkberry led other competitors to launch almost similar products. This also led to Red Mango’s entry into the American Market. Red Mango is a South Korean company that was established ahead of Pinkberry and offers the similar business model. Based on statistics, a single Pinkberry branch caters to more than 1,500 customers each day with more than $250,000 monthly revenues. Kahala Brands acquired Pinkberry in 2015 as their 18th brand.
